How I Write

I like to write at my deck in front of a window, looking out at my garden. When I need a break from writing, there’s the sky, my apple tree, and the flowerpots on my deck to help me unwind. I prefer to write in a quiet environment, I’m too easily distracted otherwise.

  • Everything Within Reach

I need my laptop, of course, my printer, my colored pens, a large pad of paper (preferably blue) with my to-do list, and space for any bright ideas I may have. I have no idea how all the other files and papers wash up there…

  • No Distractions

I try not to sneak looks at my emails and social media when I’m writing, but it’s hard!

I get up to make myself cups of tea at regular intervals, but I’m English, so I’m almost addicted to it…

  • Inspiration

"I can feel infinitely alive curled up on the sofa reading a book."

Main Working Principles

The Most Important Steps To Follow

Write Badly

It may seem counterintuitive, but I’ve come to realize that any writing is better than no writing, especially when I’m beginning a new project. I can fix bad writing. I can’t fix no writing.

Aim Low

I hate to feel like I’m failing. I prefer to set small goals – 30 minutes, four times a week, for instance – and exceed them every time. That’s motivating!

Write With Other People

I get more done when I’m writing with other people. I have a writing critique group, monthly writers’ meetings, and an online write-in on Monday mornings that anyone can join. Check my events page for details.
