Sarahlyn Bruck is the author of the award-winning Daytime Drama (2021), about a daytime soap opera star whose life threatens to fall apart when the network cancels her show. This second novel was described by Kirkus Reviews as “a fun, frothy tale that will leave readers excited for a sequel.” Sounds like a perfect read when you want to get away from it all! Daytime Drama is celebrating its one-year birthday with a special sale price of $0.99 until March 8. It’s available everywhere e-books are sold.
I asked Sarahlyn where she writes her books, and here’s what she said:
I’ve always prided myself on the ability to write just about anywhere. As the oldest of four kids, I did my homework at our often-chaotic kitchen table, and that capacity to focus thankfully stuck with me. As an adult, we moved around a bit before settling in Philadelphia. I’ve been fortunate to have a space carved out for me to work, but I’ve also been known to bring my laptop almost everywhere—gymnastics, soccer practice, coffee shops, the library, our front porch, on vacation. But since the pandemic, we’ve been limited in where we can go, so I spruced up my office and now I absolutely love it.
My desk is situated in front of a large window, which lets in a lot of light. I enjoy taking mini-breaks to see what the birds and squirrels are up to. Beside my desk is a red, pleather reading chair that I’m crazy about. It’s so comfortable to curl up in and bonus—I found it left on the curb one day with a “Free” sign taped to the back. Lucky me!
To my left is a small, cluttered bookshelf. On top is one of my most prized possessions: a framed, clay sun that my daughter made for me one winter. I’m a California girl and during the winter, I struggle with the cold and gray. So my creative kid made me a little sun that I could look at any time I was feeling blah.
And on the opposite wall from my desk, stands a mustard yellow sofa and more shelves of books, of course. During the afternoon, I often sit and read or edit on my iPad, or knit. Sometimes I nap—maybe more than sometimes. Our dog often joins me on the couch for some cuddle time. I love my office but I’m looking forward to being able to get back out there more. I miss the library!
