Here’s the second part of my writers’ update for July, featuring afree talk on how to get the right feedback on your manuscript, get-togethers for writers in Connecticut, and small traditional publishers where you can submit without an agent.
Authors Publish doesn’t only provide lists of places to submit your long and short fiction, but also offers free talks and paid workshops to help writers. On July 24, at 1pm ET, you’re invited to a free talk with author and writing teacher Jocelyn Jane Cox. This talk is all about how you can get the right feedback on your manuscript, at the right time. The Connecticut Press Club is planning at least four regular Book Slam events over the coming year. These are to be a meet-and-greet/networking events for all CPC authors looking for tips on writing and selling their books. The first one will be held at the Westport Library on October 6, at 6pm, and will include a book swap where authors can share the paperback versions of their work. It will kick off with an introductory talk by Meryl Moss of Meryl Moss Media and BookTrib.com in Westport, who will describe what BookTrib does for independent self-published authors. Authors Publish latest list, 50 Romance Publishers Seeking Submissions covers traditional print publishers, established romance stalwarts, up-and-coming eBook publishers, and everything in between. None of them require an agent in order to submit. Authors Publish do not review publishers who have been around for less than a year. So all of these publishers have at least a small track record.
Here’s another of their lists, 23 Small Presses open to Direct Submissions. The definition they use for a small press is one not big enough to be part of the Big Five. Most of these presses are pretty small and some only publish a few books every year. Many publish specific genres of books. In particular, a number of them publish poetry, but other specific genres include architecture, children’s books, music and dance, literary fiction and more. These presses are located in the US, Canada and the UK, so if accepted, you might become an international author. Alcove Press and Crooked Lane Press, imprints of Penguin Random House, are on this list. They look for general fiction (Alcove) and Mystery or horror (Crooked Lane).
