Writers Rendezvous July Update Part 1

This month’s Rendezvous brought up some interesting topics, and several events, workshops and writing opportunities. Instead of listing them by the event date, they appear in order of their deadlines that offer early booking, or for applications for writing positions, for example.

Gotham Writers Workshop in New York City is offering two in-person One-Day Intensives this Friday, July 19 from 10-5pm. One is a Screenwriting Intensive with Jeremy Wechter, and the other is a Dialogue Intensive with Richard Caliban. More information about these and future intensives here.

The Westport Library is offering a special workshop on Tuesday, July 23 from 2- 3:30 pm, entitled Think Like a Mystery Writer to Start a Thrilling New Life Chapter. In this workshop, New York Times best-selling suspense author and former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Kate White shares the three strategies that helped her reinvent her own career, plus get unstuck at moments along the way. Surprisingly, they’re variations on the strategies mystery and thriller writers use to create page-turners. That’s because Kate believes the techniques necessary to create propulsive books can also help generate momentum in life and work, leading to exciting insights and opportunities. The registration fee of $25 covers the cost of one copy of Kate’s newest novel, The Last Time She Saw Him.

The Westport Writers Workshop is opening for registration for their fall sessions on July 29. Fall session will begin the week of Monday, September 9. Some of the courses are: An Introduction To Novel Writing with Amy Shearn, the Five Senses Generative Workshop with Christine Pakkala, Poetry with Jessie McEntee, Writing Scenes with Amanda Parrish Morgan, and Start Your Book with Cara Wall.

On Saturday, October 6  from 11-5pm the CTRWA is offering a one-day conference – The Write Thing – designed to help you brush up on your writing skills. Topics will include writing dialogue, choosing the right POV, and incorporating body language. The conference, to be held at the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury CT, will feature NY Times and USA Today best-selling authors Kristan Higgins, Jamie Beck, and Jason Wrench. Two Connecticut towns are looking for their next Poet Laureate. The Norwalk Public Library in partnership with the Norwalk Arts and Cultural Commission, and Norwalk Business Development and Tourism, is seeking applications for the honorary position of Norwalk Poet Laureate. Applicant should be Norwalk residents and will serve a two-year term starting on September 2 for which they will receive a $1,000 honorarium to facilite all civic and official work performed or produced in the position. This is a wrist-banded event. The discussion and Q&A portion of this event is free to attend. However, to join the signing line, you must purchase a copy of The Days I Loved You Most. The role of the City of Milford Poet Laureate is to elevate poetry in the consciousness of Milford residents and to help celebrate the literary arts. The Poet Laureate is an honorary two-year position.  During that term, the Poet Laureate will act as an advocate for poetry, literature, and the arts, and contribute to the City of Milford’s poetry and literary legacy through public readings and participation in civic events. They will also propose and lead community projects. A panel of literary professionals and community leaders will review eligible nominations. Application deadline: August 15.  Mary-Lou Weisman, best-selling author, personal essayist, and memoir writer, offers an eight-session in-person Advanced Memoir Writing workshop for those with some experience in writing memoir and personal essay. The eight sessions will be held at the Westport Library on Thursdays, every other week, 12:30-2:30 pm beginning on September 26. Class fee: $15. Please note: This is not a beginner class. To be sure that you are ready for this you need to submit a 500-word sample of your writing. Class size is limited to 10 so if you’re interested, you should apply as soon as possible.
