Writers Rendezvous October update Part 1

We had a Zoom snafu today, since apparently my link had expired and they didn’t think to tell me. Oh well, my apologies to those of you who couldn’t make it in person and tried to attend on Zoom – I’m sorry, and hope this update will help.

Starting October 16, for six weeks, The Fairfield County Writers Studio is offering Wine & Write-Ins with April Kassner on Thursdays, from 5:30-7pm. Swing by after work or before dinner for inspiring and motivating writing prompts served up with wine and cheese in an ultra-relaxed atmosphere. Each week, you can share a piece with the group or cultivate an aura of mystery—the choice is yours. Either way, you will meet new writer friends and go home with new work. Open to writers in all genres and skill levels. $245 includes wine and cheese. Register here. More classes here.

Apparently, writing with wine is becoming a thing. If you’re in the NYC area, the well-known Gotham Writers Workshop holds monthly in-person Write-Ins. Join them for some writing and mingling time at their headquarters in Midtown. There’ll even be snacks (and wine!). The next Write-In NYC takes place this Friday, October 17, from 6:30—8:30pm. You can also sign up for November’s Write-In NYC on November 14. Register here

Shameless self-promotion time:

On October 18 at 2pm-I’ll be one of the panelists at StoryFest at the Westport Library. This multi-day event includes dozens of writers, panels, musical events, and more. The panel I’m on is titled Fiction without Borders – Storytelling without limits, and will be moderated by my friend, author Heather Frimmer. Come and say hello – and pick up an advance copy of my novel – due out on October 28th!

Also, if you’d like to read the first book in my Brentford Novels series, A Beginner’s Guide to Starting Over, to see if you like it, you can pick up a Kindle copy on Amazon for only 99 cents from now until October 19 only.

If you’re trying to figure out how to make a living being an author, writing books alone won’t cut it. But you can support yourself by being more than an author. On October 19 at 5pm PT/ 8pm ET Grant Faulkner and Brooke Warner are offering a 90-minute online workshop that might help. 5 Things we’ve learned about what it takes to be an authorpreneur is designed to encourage you to think beyond the bounds of being “just” an author and one that will allow you to share your gifts with the world in expansive and unexpected ways. $60 Get 10% off with this code: MEMOIRNATIONVIP Tickets here.

Want real advice you can use to write, publish, and grow your readership? Atmosphere Press (my publisher) is running another FREE Writers’ Summit on October 22-23. Whether you’re writing your first book or taking your author career to the next level, this is your chance to learn directly from professionals who’ve been there. More details, schedules and registration here.

I have a couple more events coming up, and I’d love you to come and say hello. On Saturday, October 25, from 12-3pm, I’ll be signing my latest book at the Barnes & Noble in Stamford (the High Ridge branch).

I’ll be launching my bookA Field Guide to Library Ghosts, at Byrd’s Books in Bethel, CT, on Sunday, October 26, at 4pm, a couple of days before the official launch on the 28th. And you can join me online too! If you register to attend the launch on Zoom, and you’d like a personalized, signed copy of the book, I’ll be delighted to sign one and have the bookstore send it to you! Hope you can come.

Even if your story is compelling, what sets a good book apart from a great one can be the prose itself. An online workshop, The Final Polish, with expert editor Tiffany Yates Martin on October 29 from 1–2:30 p.m. will show you how to eliminate useless verbiage, unnecessary modifiers, dueling descriptions, and more, to make your style as tight as your storytelling. $25 Learn more and register.

More to come on Monday!
